Tim Hilgeman Memorial Scholarship Fund for VBC Families
The Tim & Bernadette Hilgeman Family of San Diego have been active participants and enthusiastic promoters of Santiago Retreat Center’s annual Vacation Bible Camp since they first attended in 2010! Tim, father of six, a gifted parish music director and teacher, gave a week of vacation and volunteered to lead the music station at Santiago’s VBC for four years. He loved sharing his passion for music with others. VBC campers lit up when Mr. Hilgeman distributed the colorful “boom whackers” he used to teach kids about rhythm! The “Hoberman’s Sphere” was his signature visual aid to demonstrate singing techniques. He made sure kids learned a thing or two; praised God with mind, body & soul; and HAD FUN doing it!
For the Hilgeman’s, VBC was a family affair. Bernadette and the young adult/teen-aged children volunteered when their work schedules permitted. They worked with Tim at the Music Station--singing, managing the sound equipment, demonstrating hand-motions—or they led small groups of kids. The youngest Hilgeman’s participated as “campers.”
The best part of VBC was--and still is--the unique experience of staying all week at the camp ground! The friendships made, the outdoor morning Masses celebrated under the oak trees, the Rosaries prayed around the campfire, Jesus present in the Eucharist, igniting the faith of children, and the company of other like-minded families experiencing the beauty of God’s creation at Santiago—THIS was what made VBC a priceless experience for the whole family—learning about, loving God, and serving Him all week, TOGETHER!
In October 2014, Tim Hilgeman lost a short but mighty battle with cancer. It was Tim’s wish that the family continue the tradition of attending Santiago VBC every year—and they do. Friends of the Hilgeman Family have established a scholarship fund in his memory to ensure that families facing challenges would have an opportunity to renew their families on the faith-filled rock that is the unique treasure of Santiago’s Annual Vacation Bible Camp!
